چکیده

The holotype of Malerisaurus langstoni from the Late Triassic (Otischalkian) Trilophosaurus quarry 2 of West Texas is a chimera. The holotype represents at least 6-7 individuals of four reptilian groups: Trilophosauridae, Rhynchosauridae, Parasuchidae and Aetosauria. The majority of the material, including all of the cranial fragments, are re-identified as Trilophosaurus buettneri. Based on the chimeric nature of the specimen, the holotype of M. langstoni is restricted to the skull fragments and considered a junior subjective synonym of T. buetterni. This reassessment of M. langstoni calls into question the validity of M. robinsonae from the Maleri Formation in India and suggests that at least some of the elements referred to this taxon may, in fact, be a record of Trilophosaurus. This would extend the paleogeographic range of Trilophosaurus from a taxon endemic to the American Southwest to a nearly Pangean distribution during the Late Triassic.

Revision of the Archosauromorph Reptile Trilophosaurus, With a Description of the First Skull of Trilophosaurus Jacobsi, From the Upper Triassic Chinle Group, West Texas, Usa

The first abundant, well-preserved fossils of the unusual archosauromorph reptile Trilophosaurus jacobsi Murry are from an Upper Triassic bonebed in the lower-most Trujillo Formation of the Chinle Group in Borden County, Texas. A nearly complete left side of the skull and incomplete but articulated mandible of a juvenile individual demonstrate that Trilophosaurus jacobsi Murry is referable to T...

A bird-like skull in a Triassic diapsid reptile increases heterogeneity of the morphological and phylogenetic radiation of Diapsida

The Triassic Period saw the first appearance of numerous amniote lineages (e.g. Lepidosauria, Archosauria, Mammalia) that defined Mesozoic ecosystems following the end Permian Mass Extinction, as well as the first major morphological diversification of crown-group reptiles. Unfortunately, much of our understanding of this event comes from the record of large-bodied reptiles (total body length >...

Extreme Modification of the Tetrapod Forelimb in a Triassic Diapsid Reptile

The tetrapod forelimb is one of the most versatile structures in vertebrate evolution, having been co-opted for an enormous array of functions. However, the structural relationships between the bones of the forelimb have remained largely unchanged throughout the 375 million year history of Tetrapoda, with a radius and ulna made up of elongate, paralleling shafts contacting a series of shorter c...

Detrital Zircon Link Between Headwaters and Terminus of the Upper Triassic Chinle-Dockum Paleoriver System

New detrital-zircon geochronologic data reveal that a through-going paleoriver connected Texas with Nevada in Late Triassic time. Sandstone from the Upper Triassic Santa Rosa Sandstone (Dockum Group) from northwestern Texas contains a detrital zircon suite nearly identical to that found in western Nevada in the Upper Triassic Osobb Formation (Auld Lang Syne Group, correlative with the Chinle Fo...

FAUNAL REVIEW OF THE UPPER TRIASSIC CHINLE FORMATION OF ARIZONA WILLIAM G. PARKER Division of Resource Management, Petrified Forest National Park

The Chinle Formation of Arizona is a highly fossiliferous terrestrial unit from the Late Triassic Period. Fossil vertebrate collections from the Chinle Formation date back to the late 1890s and document a diverse fauna that is correlative with other Late Triassic faunas worldwide. No fewer than 18 holotype specimens including metoposaurids, phytosaurs, aetosaurs, crocodylomorphs, dinosauromorph...
